What is Microneedling?

Skin concerns rarely sit in just one category. You may be noticing rough texture, enlarged pores, early lines, post acne marks, dullness, or skin that simply no longer looks as fresh and resilient as it once did. In many cases, the issue is not only on the surface. It is also about how well the skin is functioning beneath it.

Microneedling is a non surgical, medically led treatment that works by creating controlled micro injuries in the skin using very fine needles. This stimulates the skin’s natural repair response and encourages the production of collagen and elastin, which are essential for firmer, smoother, healthier looking skin.

At our clinic, microneedling is always consultation led. That matters because not every concern should be treated in the same way, and not every patient needs the same depth, approach, or treatment course. We assess your skin properly before treatment so we can decide whether microneedling is the right option on its own or as part of a broader skin plan.

How does it work?

Microneedling works by creating thousands of precise microchannels in the skin. These tiny controlled injuries trigger the body’s natural healing response, which helps stimulate fibroblast activity and the production of new collagen and elastin.

This is important because many common skin concerns are linked to changes in skin structure. Acne scarring, textural irregularity, fine lines, enlarged pores, and general dullness often reflect reduced collagen support, slower cell turnover, and uneven repair over time.

During treatment, the microneedling device is passed across the skin in a controlled and targeted way. The depth can be adjusted depending on the treatment area and the concern being addressed. This allows us to work more gently where the skin is thinner and more intensively where greater remodelling is needed.

Microneedling may be appropriate for patients experiencing:

  • fine lines and early skin ageing
  • acne scarring
  • enlarged pores
  • uneven skin texture
  • mild pigmentation irregularity
  • dull or tired looking skin
  • certain stretch marks or areas of skin laxity

The aim is not to create an artificial result. It is to encourage healthier skin behaviour so the skin gradually becomes smoother, stronger, and more refined.

How is the treatment administered?

Your journey begins with a full consultation and skin assessment. We look at your medical history, current skincare, treatment goals, and whether there are any factors that may affect healing or treatment suitability.

On the day of treatment, the skin is cleansed thoroughly and prepared. A topical numbing cream may be applied beforehand to improve comfort, depending on the treatment depth and area. The microneedling device is then passed across the skin using settings tailored to your individual needs.

The treatment itself is precise and methodical. Some areas may require a lighter approach, while others can be treated more intensively depending on the level of scarring, texture, or skin change present. A targeted serum may also be applied during or after treatment to support hydration and recovery.

Most patients describe the sensation as manageable. You may feel heat, vibration, or a scratchy feeling during the session, but this is usually well tolerated. Once treatment is complete, the skin may look flushed and feel warm, similar to a mild sunburn.

A course of treatments is usually recommended for best results. Your clinician will advise on the number of sessions needed based on your skin concerns, treatment depth, and the degree of correction required.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects are usually mild and short lived.

After treatment, you may notice:

  • Pink or red skin
  • Warmth or tightness
  • Mild sensitivity
  • Slight swelling
  • Dryness or light flaking

This is all part of the normal healing process and usually settles within a few days.

Results are not instant. Microneedling works by triggering repair, so the skin needs time to rebuild. If we are treating acne scars or more advanced texture concerns, a course of treatments is often needed.

Microneedling may not be suitable if you have:

  • Active acne breakouts
  • A skin infection
  • Certain inflammatory skin conditions
  • Impaired wound healing
  • A history of abnormal scarring

That is why a proper consultation matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Microneedling stimulates the skin’s natural repair response. By creating controlled micro injuries, it encourages collagen and elastin production, which can help improve texture, soften fine lines, refine pores, and support smoother, healthier looking skin.

Most patients find it manageable. A numbing cream is often used before treatment, which makes the procedure much more comfortable. You may still feel some heat, scratching, or sensitivity, particularly in bony areas or where deeper treatment is needed.

That depends on what we are treating. A general skin refresh may need fewer sessions, while acne scarring or more noticeable textural concerns usually require a course. Most patients benefit from a series of treatments spaced several weeks apart.

Some patients notice brighter, fresher looking skin within a couple of weeks, but collagen remodelling takes longer. More meaningful improvement usually develops gradually over 4 to 12 weeks and continues with a course of treatment.

Downtime is usually mild. The skin can be red, warm, and slightly tight for a few days, and some light dryness or flaking is common. Most patients return to normal daily activities quickly, although skin should be treated gently while it heals.

Yes, microneedling can be a useful treatment for certain acne scars, particularly where the aim is to improve skin texture and stimulate collagen remodelling. The extent of improvement depends on the type and severity of scarring, which is why assessment is important.

Microneedling can create long term improvement, but the skin continues to age and change over time. Maintenance treatments and good skincare are often recommended if you want to preserve results and continue supporting skin quality.
